How to develop the mindset of a professional player and the mental strength to perform to the best of your ability – constantly and with ease and joy.
I grew up with the dream of becoming a professional soccer player. When I was 12 years old, I joined the Academy Team of SV Wehen Wiesbaden. Later I played for Tus Koblenz in the Regionalliga (4th division).
My goal was to play in the highest leagues in Germany. I invested and sacrificed a lot.
I was a player who was overthinking and putting a lot of pressure on himself.
Everything changed when I received a soccer scholarship to study and play in the United States.
I just enjoyed playing soccer again. With ease, courage and confidence.
It didn’t bother me what anyone else said about me or my performance
I took risks and dared to take responsibility.
I was injured less.
I rediscovered the joy in playing soccer again.
And: I was playing better than I ever had. I scored. I was named captain. I got a lot of accolades. And I even was on the list for the MLS Combine.
At that time I asked myself: “Why haven’t I been able to perform like this more often in the past?”
I recognized that my mindset and my mental strength was not as firm and stable as they needed to be.
I was my own enemy.
Today I am a Mental and Performance Coach for soccer players up into the Bundesliga. I help them build up their mental strength so that they can show what’s inside of them and achieve the career they dream of.
Steps to your Performance: 4 Components of mental Strength
It starts with Clarity. You need to know where you're at, where you want to go and what you can do every day to come closer to your goals. It starts with a vision that drives and motivates you every single day.
Professional players are in the center of attention of the media. The pressure is high, the margin for errors is low and there will always be challenges and setbacks. Therefore it is crucial to control your focus and regulate your thoughts. This is the precondition to enter the Flow State.
Confidence is the most important building block of mental strength. It's the feeling that you can figure it out and that you have everything inside of you to deal with whatever the world throws at you. Are you conscious of your strengths and weaknesses? That's what this component is all about. You need to be independent of what is going on around you.
The secret to your longterm successful career are your habits and routines. You are what you repeatedly do. This component is the key to consistently performing on your highest level - to fulfill your full potential in sport and in life.
Mental strength starts with you and is then contagious to other players of your team. Therefore it is important to develop your leadership skills to become a player that helps others improve their game as well.

I sometimes ask myself: “What would have been possible if I had known what I know today?” I actually don’t know. I am thankful for everything that happened because it made me the person I am today.
